Sweden Turns Japanese

This is an Op Ed by Paul Krugman published in the NY Times in April 2014, thought i would repost it here for everyone to read:

Three years ago Sweden was widely regarded as a role model in how to deal with a global crisis. The nation’s exports were hit hard by slumping world trade but snapped back; its well-regulated banks rode out the financial storm; its strong social insurance programs supported consumer demand; and unlike much of Europe, it still had its own currency, giving it much-needed flexibility. By mid-2010 output was surging, and unemployment was falling fast. Sweden, declared The Washington Post, was “the rock star of the recovery.”

Then the sadomonetarists moved in.
The story so far: In 2010 Sweden’s economy was doing much better than those of most other advanced countries. But unemployment was still high, and inflation was low. Nonetheless, the Riksbank — Sweden’s equivalent of the Federal Reserve — decided to start raising interest rates.
There was some dissent within the Riksbank over this decision. Lars Svensson, a deputy governor at the time — and a former Princeton colleague of mine — vociferously opposed the rate hikes. Mr. Svensson, one of the world’s leading experts on Japanese-style deflationary traps, warned that raising interest rates in a still-depressed economy put Sweden at risk of a similar outcome. But he found himself isolated, and left the Riksbank in 2013.
Sure enough, Swedish unemployment stopped falling soon after the rate hikes began. Deflation took a little longer, but it eventually arrived. The rock star of the recovery has turned itself into Japan.
So why did the Riksbank make such a terrible mistake? That’s a hard question to answer, because officials changed their story over time. At first the bank’s governor declared that it was all about heading off inflation: “If the interest rate isn’t raised now, we’ll run the risk of too much inflation further ahead ... Our most important task is to ensure that we meet our inflation target of 2 percent.” But as inflation slid toward zero, falling ever further below that supposedly crucial target, the Riksbank offered a new rationale: tight money was about curbing a housing bubble, to avert financial instability. That is, as the situation changed, officials invented new rationales for an unchanging policy.

In short, this was a classic case of sadomonetarism in action.
I’m using that term (coined by William Keegan of The Observer) advisedly, not just to be colorful. At least as I define it, sadomonetarism is an attitude, common among monetary officials and commentators, that involves a visceral dislike for low interest rates and easy money, even when unemployment is high and inflation is low. You find many sadomonetarists at international organizations; in the United States they tend to dwell on Wall Street or in right-leaning economics departments. They don’t, I’m happy to say, exert much influence at the Federal Reserve — but they do constantly harass the Fed, demanding that it stop its efforts to boost employment.

And when I say that the dislike for low rates is visceral, I mean just that. While sadomonetarists may offer what sound like coherent analytical rationales for their policy views, they don’t change their policy views in response to changing conditions — they just invent new rationales. This strongly suggests that what we’re looking at here is a gut feeling rather than a thought-out position.
Indeed, the Riksbank’s evolving justifications for rate hikes were mirrored at international organizations like the Switzerland-based Bank for International Settlements, an influential bankers’ bank that is a sadomonetarist stronghold. Just like the Riksbank, the bank changed its rationale for rate hikes — It’s about inflation! It’s about financial stability! — but never its policy demands.
Where does this gut dislike for low rates come from? At some level it has to reflect an instinctive identification with the interests of wealthy creditors as opposed to usually poorer debtors. But it’s also driven, I believe, by the desire of many monetary officials to pose as serious, tough-minded people — and to demonstrate how tough they are by inflicting pain.
Whatever their motives, sadomonetarists have already done a lot of damage. In Sweden they have extracted defeat from the jaws of victory, turning an economic success story into a tale of stagnation and deflation as far as the eye can see.
And they could do much more damage in the future. Financial markets have been fairly calm lately — no big banking crises, no imminent threats of euro breakup. But it would be wrong and dangerous to assume that recovery is assured: bad policies could all too easily undermine our still-sluggish economic progress. So when serious-sounding men in dark suits tell you that it’s time to stop all this easy money and raise rates, beware: Look at what such people have done to Sweden.

Dream Theater - 2013 album Streaming review

some notes about what i felt when listening to the latest effort from DT.

conclusion: an average album, with a few gems, and a horrible production. greatest surprise is john myunng. disapointments include a shitty drum sound (with a stellar drumming performance), dibious synth sounds (again, not criticising rudess ability. he can play, nuff said) and a nod to the 80s production in general that i could have lived without.

the album is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htfOvEO46ok&noredirect=1

1.     "False Awakening Suite"

    I. "Sleep Paralysis"
    II. "Night Terrors"
III. "Lucid Dream" (Instrumental, music by Petrucci, Rudess)

A rather preachy intro. Arranged "a la elfman", but with a 80s black metal sound (read: cheap overcompressed drums and mid-heavy guitars, with really cold synth lines over).

The composition in itself is interesting tho, but the prod kills it for me. unnaceptable sound for a non-demo. 4/10

2.     "The Enemy Inside"       6:17

intro is drum porn for slayer fans from the bosthaph era. guitars are  greasy as fuck and there it fits well. still hate the drum sound. geez this is the worst sounding drums since st anger.

real cool sound from the bass. love that gritty distortion.

is it just me or labrie sounds like he is recording from a karaoke machine? the voice/music separation is kind of upsetting to the ear.

i can't understand the choices of sounds from ruddess. does he miss his 80s years?

all together, the compression makes that song sond small and dated. too bad coz it has some real badass moments in the uptempo sections. the chorus is just DT as usual.

how many times have they done the "slow portion with a shitload of strings" trick since scenes from a memory? 6/10

3.     "The Looking Glass"       4:53

HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS WHO PUT A SCORPION TRACK ON A DT ALBUM!

4.     "Enigma Machine" (instrumental, music by Petrucci, Rudess, Myung, Mangini)     6:03

ok this sound is just here to stay so i'll stop complaining. this is a cool track, which will sound a lot better live. i like the Q and A part between the hammond organ sounds and the guitar. it throws so many ideas in the air i don't really know if it is meant to go anywhere. might be the reason for the song name.

john myunng is probably as its grooviest in this album

5.     "The Bigger Picture"       7:41

i miss the mix from the previous album with some good spatial separation of the arrangements. everything is so all over the its a little hard to hear what's happening.

nice little piano/vox intro. (and with a sound that doesnt make me vomit).

actually this is a pretty good song.
if you forget the drum sound.

6.     "Behind the Veil"       6:53

filler. not bad but inot particularly great. except for a killer bass again.

7.     "Surrender to Reason" (Lyrics by Myung)     6:35

i'm starting to wonder if this album was recorded between when dream and day unite and Awake.

there is so many winks at this era i wonder if they just didnt listen to the old stuff and thought "what could we do like that".

8.     "Along for the Ride" (Music by Petrucci, Rudess)     4:45

bllluh. 1/10

9.     "Illumination Theory"

    I. "Paradoxe de la Lumière Noire"
    II. "Live, Die, Kill"
    III. "The Embracing Circle"
    IV. "The Pursuit of Truth"
    V. "Surrender, Trust & Passion"

and here is the fun song of the album. by far the best effort. loads of layers (messed up since everything seem to be ground by a blender in the mix), riffs a gogo and somehow the whole thing is coherent.
9/10

Aujourdh'hui, Aux nations unies / Today at the UN

Today at the United nations, Palestine will try to get some kind of international recognition as an observing member of the UN. This gives the PA the same ammount of diplomatic relation to the UN as the vatican has. It ain't much but it's a start.

the BBC has produced a guide that is quite good:

Don't give money, give peace of mind.

Don't give money, give peace of mind.

The daily morning show on SVT (god morgon sverige) had a report today about what swedes call "mobbning", or bullying. The law allows kids (or rather, their parents) to sue the local governement responsible for the school if they hav been victim of bullying. This is aiming at making local governments taking actions against bullies; the Parliament logic being that "it has to be more expensive for the local authorities to do nothing than taking action against such behaviour".

Speaking as someone who had to deal with this, i'll say: Bullshit.

Yes, bullshit. You think a kid that has been taunted, beaten, called names for being different, gay, muslim, red-headed or whatever other slighest trait of difference he/she could have, gives a shit about getting money for it? I'll tell you what i wanted: i wanted the assholes to go away. sent to another school. I didn't want money so i could feel compensated for what they did to me, i wanted them to get out of my life so that i could live the way i wanted.

that should be the law: If you are a bully, you don't belong in this school. Fear should be in the mind of bullies, not of the school accountant.

double haiku

It takes a tear
to know i really miss you
It took a while
before i knew i wouldn't see you

No other side awaits
No rest, no peace
We've had it all toghether here.

guitou, guitou, on t'encule.
